March - Heartworm Prevention Month

Picture
March marks the beginning of spring, the thaw of winter, and the start of mosquitos.

Heartworm disease starts just by a simple bite of an infected mosquito that is carrying the heartworm larvae. The heartworms then matures, living in major vessels around the heart. These worms can grow up to a foot long and take 6 months until they can be detectable through routine testing. It is fatal if left untreated.

We recommend your pet be on heartworm preventatives year-round. For heartworm prevention, we recommend Sentinel for dogs and Revolution Plus for cats.
